Founded in 1911 by Balthazer Merz, the brand originally employed over two thousand workers, a rarity in the once poor region around Berlin however globalisation ended the family owned business with a lack of orders three years before Peter Plotnicki, a professor and mens tailor later found it after researching into the clothing and textiles industry. Intrigued by the history of the brand he travelled to the Swabian Alps to meet with one of the last remaining textile manufacturers Rudolf Loder, discovering a room of unused circular knitting machines from the 1920's to 60's together they set on reviving the brand alongside Plotnicki's wife, Gitta. Taking a whole year to restore the machinery, Plotnicki worked on the first collection. Hearing about vision, the decedents of Balthazar Merz offered them the old brand name 'Merz b. Schwanen'
In 2011 the brand presented their first new collection at the international fashion fair 'Bread and Butter'. Blending modern designs with new fabrics and inspiration taken from worker's clothing in the 20's, 30's and 40's whilst not forgetting the true heritage of the brand. Using only the highest quality bio cotton and using such authentic machinery accounts for small differences in each piece produced. All production processes are made in Germany with manufacturing held in the Swabian Alps, even down to the boxes the shirts and t-shirts are packaged in are produced by independent family businesses.
